VEHICLE ENDS UP IN RIVER DESPITE BARRIER TAPE WARNING

Heidelberg Times attended a scene where a light commercial vehicle was swept away by strong currents at the low water bridge in Maré Street just before 00:00 last night (January 8 ).
The road was closed off due to heavy downpours flooding the bridge earlier in the night. Despite this, the vehicle still attempted to cross the road with strong currents and deep waters.
Three occupants were rescued from the vehicle before it was recovered.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Heidelberg Volunteer Medics and First Responders, Safari Panel Beaters Heidelberg, AutoTech Towing, Lesedi Fire and Rescue and members of the public all worked together to recover the vehicle from the water.
Every year when the bridge is in flood, a number of people attempt to cross the road. This is extremely dangerous and could claim your life.
Please, DO NOT CROSS THE LOW WATER BRIDGE IN MARÉ STREET WHEN IN FLOOD! Adhere to the warning tapes and make use of alternative routes.
