CO-OPERATION LEADS TO ARREST OF HIJACKING SUSPECTS

Excellent teamwork between various safety and security organizations and law enforcement agencies has led to the arrest of five alleged hijackers on the R42 just outside Heidelberg today (August 13).
Reports of a suspicious vehicle (a silver bakkie) with cloned number plates had been received from security structures in Meyerton following identification via that town’s SNIPR cameras. The vehicle was headed in the direction of Heidelberg.
Members from Midvaal followed the bakkie and it soon became apparent that the vehicle was not travelling alone. A BMW SUV, a VW Golf and a truck were also identified as being part of the group.
The news was passed on to various security and law enforcement structures in Heidelberg and the bakkie was pulled over just before the four-way stop at the Jordaanpark entrance. The truck was pulled over and was also identified as a previously-hijacked vehicle, but the BMW and the Golf sped off at high speed. The BMW was later found abandoned on the N3 with a flat tyre.
A total of five suspects were arrested and have been detained by SAPS.
A huge thank you to all the different sectors who contributed to this successful operation. The call to action was answered by a large number of organizations including the AfriForum Heidelberg Neighbourhood Watch, the Heidelberg Taxi Association, Lesedi Traffic, Heidelberg SAPS, Crime Stop Heidelberg and Silver Security Group. A special mention also to Heidelberg Hope for having the foresight to erect a number of SNIPR cameras at the entrances/exits of our town.
